How to Remove a Gas Fireplace Insert

Sometimes it is necessary to remove a gas fireplace insert. This could be due to repair work that needs to be completed or, in some instances, the insert may need to be entirely replaced. Removing the insert is not a complex process, and it can be done within a short period of time with a few simple tools such as a screwdriver and wrench.

The following are steps to adhere to when removing a gas fireplace insert:

1. Turn off gas and electrical connections that feed to the fireplace.

Remember, safety first. When working with gas or electricity, it is best to disconnect to avoid any accidents. This is a simple step that can save a lot of potential problems.

2. Remove the doors from the fireplace and clean out the inside of the fire box.

Removing the doors by using the screwdriver will make it easier to work on removing the insert. Make sure that you keep track of any screws or other small parts that you remove so they won't be lost. Cleaning out the old embers and ashes that may be in the firebox will prevent messy clean up that may result from pulling out the grate or any other parts from the fireplace.

3. Pull the gas fireplace insert out from the firebox

Make sure to do this carefully as the insert will still be connected to gas line. Rapid or quick pulling could damage the line or connections.

4. Disconnect gas and electrical connections and vent pipes

Use a wrench to disconnect the connections for gas and electric. Also use the wrench to disconnect the vent pipes that are hooked up to the insert.

5. Remove the gas fireplace insert from the firebox.

Now that everything has been completely disconnected, the insert should be able to be easily removed.

Whenever working with gas or electricity, it is important to ensure safety. It is mandatory that anyone who is completing a project will take the time to disconnect these sources to avoid any accidents that could possibly occur. Once safety has been established, the actual project of removing the insert can be completed quickly and easily.
